Police Fire Tear Gas On Their Former Oga, Caleb Olubolade

Caleb Olubolade was a Navy Captain and as such he was the first Military Governor of Bayelsa State when the state was created in 1996. Then, Goodluck Jonathan was one of the men who used to call him sir just to get some favour from government. But he later came back and worked for Jonathan as minister of Police Affairs and he was the one now calling Jonathan sir.

The same scenario played out in Ado Ekiti on Saturday as his former boys, who used to call him Sir, being the minister in charge of Nigeria Police, refused to look at his face when trouble broke out after he was defeated by the strong man of PDP politics in Ekiti State, ex-Governor Ayo Fayose.

The PDP state congress which held at the Great Eagle Hall on Ikere-Ado Road in the capital town resulted in a fiasco, as thugs tried to disrupt the exercise. But who brought the thugs? Sources say others in the contest mobilized thugs to the venue after they discovered that Fayose had won over 80% of the votes...

In the ensuing melee, security agents on hand released canisters of tear gas to disperse the gathering. But as the crisis raged, one of the main contenders in the race, Caleb Olubolade, immediate past Minister of Police Affairs was also tear-gassed, along with another aspirant, Chief Dayo Adeyeye, both of whom are from Ekiti South Senatorial District, an area which has never produced a governor in the 22-year-old state.

Fayose who is from the Ekiti Central senatorial district was governor from 2003 to 2006 while Chief Niyi Adebayo, also from Fayose’s senatorial district, was governor from 1999 to 2003.

The primary went ahead amid tight security and Fayose was declared winner.

In the primary’s result as announced by a five-man PDP National Special State Congress Committee headed by former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, Fayose was declared the party’s candidate “having polled 462 votes out of the 477 votes cast.”

Odili, who said 544 delegates were accredited for the exercise, disclosed that the poll result showed that out of the 477 ballot papers issued, four ballot papers were voided, while Navy Captain Olubolade scored seven votes, Prince Dayo Adeyeye three votes and Mrs. Modupe Ogundipe, one vote.

Fayose remains a force to be reckoned with in Ekiti politics, no matter what, and he proved it on Saturday.
